MLB is the only major league where two teams per league sit out the first round entirely, and where every round is played at a different series length. Learn how it all fits together, then build your own October run.
Three division champs, three wild cards, per league — no conferences, just AL and NL.
Since 2022, MLB's postseason has featured 12 teams: six from the American League, six from the National League. Each league guarantees a spot to its three division winners (East, Central, West), then fills out the field with the three teams with the best remaining records regardless of division — the wild cards. A team can win 90+ games and still watch October from home if two divisions in its league are stacked and a weaker division let a lesser team sneak into a wild card spot instead.
Seeding within each league runs 1 through 6 purely by regular-season record among qualifiers, with one exception: division winners always outrank wild cards regardless of actual record. A wild card team with a better record than the third division winner still seeds behind it — division titles carry real weight.
No other major league changes series length round by round like this.
Wild Card Series — First to 2 Wins
Seed 3 hosts Seed 6, and Seed 4 hosts Seed 5, all games at the higher seed's ballpark. Seeds 1 and 2 rest. It's the shortest, most volatile round in the sport's postseason.
Division Series — First to 3 Wins
Seed 1 waits for the winner of 4-vs-5; Seed 2 waits for the winner of 3-vs-6. No re-seeding — those matchups are locked in before the Wild Card Series even starts.
Championship Series & World Series — First to 4 Wins
The two Division Series winners in each league meet in the League Championship Series. The AL and NL champions then meet in the World Series, both played at the classic best-of-7 length.
That's exactly why our simulator adjusts the number of games needed to clinch depending on the round — a Wild Card team only needs 2 wins to advance, a Division Series winner needs 3, and a League Championship or World Series requires 4.

Pitching Depth Wins Short Series
Aces matter more in October
A best-of-3 or best-of-5 series can be dominated by a single ace pitching twice. Rotation depth heading into the postseason is often a better predictor than regular-season win total alone.
Division Strength Varies
Not every division winner is elite
A weak division can crown a mediocre champion while a stacked division sends a genuinely great team into the wild card scramble. Weigh division depth, not just who finished first.

Fresh legs into October
Bullpen fatigue and nagging injuries built up over 162 games often decide short series more than raw talent. A healthy team peaking in September is dangerous.

Seeds 4-8 are razor-thin
It's common for 4-5 teams across three divisions to be separated by a handful of games for the final wild card spots in September. Don't be afraid to predict a late surge here.

It's a real MLB rule: the two division winners with the best records in each league earn a bye straight into the Division Series, rewarding the top of the regular-season standings. Only the third division winner has to play through the Wild Card round alongside the three wild card teams.
MLB fixes the Division Series matchups before the Wild Card round even starts: the 4-vs-5 winner always plays Seed 1, and the 3-vs-6 winner always plays Seed 2, regardless of which specific teams advance. Our simulator follows that same fixed structure.
Because MLB itself uses different series lengths per round: Wild Card Series are best-of-3 (first to 2 wins), Division Series are best-of-5 (first to 3 wins), and both Championship Series and the World Series are best-of-7 (first to 4 wins). The simulator automatically adjusts what counts as a series-clinching score depending on which round you're in.
